Personal Liability vs Personal Injury Coverage

Do you know the difference between personal liability and personal injury coverage on your homeowner policy?

Personal liability coverage provides protection for non-work-related accidents to a third party. This could be a trip/fall accident at your house or maybe your dog bit somebody (some policies exclude canine liability). But personal liability coverage also provides protection in case you hit somebody with a stray golf ball, or maybe you pulled a Dick Chaney and accidentally shoot somebody while hunting.

Okay, if that's personal liability coverage then what's personal injury coverage? Well personal injury liability coverage on your homeowner policy provides protection against things like: libel, slander or defamation of character. It also covers invasion of privacy, wrongful eviction, false arrest.

Even though the additional premium for personal injury coverage on your homeowner policy can be as little as $50 a year I see don't have this valuable protection on many policies!

Does your homeowner policy provide personal injury protection coverage? If you're not sure and you'd like to review the coverages we'd love to help.
